Transplantation Research

Transplantation Research

The Nuffield Department of Surgery's research programme in transplant biology was established by Professor Sir Peter Morris over 30 years ago in 1974. The programme's research focus is interdisciplinary and combines laboratory science with translation research. Its research agenda is directed to the understanding and optimal management of organ failure by transplantation, with an emphasis on renal failure, liver failure and diabetes. Researchers are working to improve transplant techniques from organ retrieval through to improved tissue matching and individualising the management of immuno-response in transplant patients. This programme includes a number of vibrant research groups devoted to pancreatic islet transplantation, immunosupression and tolerance, and continuous fine tuning of transplant techniques and protocols.
