Dr Shobhana Nagraj will discuss ‘Applied global surgery research' and Dr Godfrey Sama Philipo will present 'A Journey Undertaken by Families to Access General Surgical Care for their Children at Muhimbili National Hospital, Tanzania; Prospective Observational Cohort Study'.

Biographies

Dr Shobhana NagrajDr Shobhana Nagraj is a Post-doctoral Clinical Researcher, with a professional background in paediatric surgery and primary care, and a research background in Health Services Research and Implementation Science.

During her time as a clinician and medical educator, Shobi has worked closely with rural communities and Community Health Care Workers in low-resource settings globally.  She is passionate about delivering high-quality, universal health services to women and children, that meet the needs of the communities and end-users.  Shobi’s research focuses on the use of theory in the design, development and implementation of complex interventions (including mobile technologies) to support the healthcare workforce in low-resource settings.  She is interested in how complex innovations can be designed to facilitate implementation and sustainability within the health system and the communities they serve.  

She is a Co-Director for the Oxford University Global Surgery Course, and leads the Global Surgery day on the International Health and Tropical Medicine master's course at the University of Oxford.

Dr Godfrey Sama PhilipoDr Godfrey Sama Philipo is a Medical Doctor and Public Health specialist and Global Surgery researcher, currently working as a Research and Patient Outcomes Coordinator for the RCSI/COSECSA Collaboration Programme at the College of Surgeons of East Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA). He also leads Children Surgery Research at Muhimbili National Hospital with the University of Oxford.

He was trained at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS), Southern Medical University (SMU) and is currently taking an online Master of Global Surgical Care (MGSC) degree at the University of British Columbia (UBC). He worked as a Clinical Research Coordinator for the MUHAS-ORCI-UCSF Cancer Collaboration, leading a number of multidisciplinary international collaborative cancer research projects. He was a Co-coordinator of the International Federation of Medical Students Association (IFMSA) Global Surgery Small Working Group, and co-founded the International Students Surgical Network (InciSioN), a nonprofit organization currently representing over 5,000 students, trainees, and early career physicians around the world who are passionate about Global Surgery. He has participated in number of research in global surgery including the World Development Indicator (WDI) surgical data of 2016 on access to quality surgical care globally and partnership experiences to develop a children surgery program.

His interest is Global Surgery research, training and advocacy, partnerships development and Implementation Science research.
