Statistician

I joined the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences in 2022 and am in the Surgical Intervention Trials Unit (SITU). My job title is variously defined as "statistician", "research statistician" or more commonly "medical statistician". My background is in computing and my interest is in statistics, with my field being the measurement of predictions, whether deterministic, probabilistic, or other. This is an underexplored field which has many applications including risk, currency and election performance, but its application to medical statistics is why I am engaged by SITU as trial statistician. After some years of working in the financial services sector it is a pleasant change to be engaged in making ill people better, although an inability to pronounce the word "statistician" sometimes trips me up. I am not the tenor nor the professor of the same name in Southampton University.
