Surgical Grand Rounds - Mr Michael Silva and Professor Paul Johnson

Biographies

Paul Johnson is Director of the DRWF Human Islet Isolation Programme, Lead for the Oxford Islet Transplant Programme, and Professor of Paediatric Surgery at the University of Oxford. He is Chair of the NHSBT UK Islet Steering Group and is Past-President of the International Pancreas and Islet Transplant Association (IPITA). He helped perform the first Total Pancreatectomy and Islet Autotransplant in the UK and was award a Hunterian Professorship from the RCS for this work. He has an active ‘bench to bedside’ research programme which focuses on enabling immunosuppression-free islet allotransplantation for children with type 1 diabetes soon after diagnosis and was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the American Academy of Paediatrics for this research.

Michael Silva is a Consultant Hepatobiliary, Pancreatic (HPB) Surgeon at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Mr Silva is the Training Programme Director for Higher Surgical Trainees (General Surgery) in the Oxford Deanery.

He is also Director of the Surgical Advisory Network in the UK for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and in this role has set up the Foundation Trainees Surgical Society – UK, a National forum for foundation trainees at RCSEd. He also was Regional Surgical Advisor for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh for Oxfordshire from 2013-2017. He is a Fellow of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and is also a Clinical Lecturer at Worcester College, Oxford University

His research interests include the study of intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms of bile ducts (IPNB), a pre-cancerous lesion leading to cholangiocarcinoma and is lead for the National IPNB database he set up. Mr Silva is also Oxford Lead for the National programme for total pancreatectomy and islet auto-transplantation (TPIAT).

Mr Silva is specialist advisor to the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), interventional procedures program and is on the Editorial Board of the British Journal of Surgery (Open) and Current Surgery Reports. He is a reviewer for many leading scientific journals.
He has in excess of 80 publications in international peer reviewed journals and has written many book chapters on his speciality interests.
