Impact of Pancreas Transplant on Diabetic Complications: Retinoparhy, Gastroparesis and Automatic Dysregulation

Aim: Pancreatic transplantation remains the best opportunity to maintain normoglycaemia with full insulin independence, with the potential for stabilisation and potentially reversal of complications associated with diabetes. The aim of this review is to rigorously examine the evidence supporting a beneficial impact of pancreas transplantation on diabetic complications, with specific focus on gastroparesis, autonomic neuropathy and retinopathy. Method: A narrative review of literature from inception to February 2016 using OVID interface searching EMBASE and MEDLINE databases. All studies related to diabetic complications and pancreas transplantation examined for clinical relevance with no exclusion criteria. Key ideas extracted and referenced. Conclusion: Proof of the beneficial effects on diabetic complications requires detailed long-term follow-up to clarify and validate many of the small studies performed with regard to the various comorbidities associated with diabetes.
