\n \n \n \nThe Oxford Surgical Interventional Unit was launched at the Royal College of Surgeons Annual Day held at St Anne's College on 26th March, 2014. The event, which was attended by 100 delegates, included presentations from individual unit directors on their progress and also a \"hot topic\" of their choice relating to surgical research and innovation.\r\n\r\nTopics chosen included \"Placebo controls in surgical trials\", \"Teaching Undergraduates in Clinical Research\" and \"Surgical Devices in Surgical Trlals\".

\n \n \n \nJo Cook, Research Nurse on Professor Taggart's ART trial, was presented with the medal at this year's Royal Society of Cardiothoracic Surgeons' annual meeting in Brighton for her presentation on \"The Patient, The GP, The Primary Care Team; their relationship, adherence to treatment and the implications for research\".\r\n\r\nJo was awarded with her medal at the 2014 Forum in Brighton after her winning both the Cardiothoracic Forum Best Paper and first prize in the poster competition at the 2013 meeting.

\n \n \n \nPrasanna Sooriakumaran, Senior Fellow in Robotic Surgery & Urology with the Surgical Intervention Trials Unit spoke about his research on local radio on Thursday evening and Friday morning (27th and 28th February) in an attempt to raise public awareness of prostate cancer and it's treatment.\r\n\r\nHis paper on \"Surgery v Radiotherapy in Prostate Cancer\" is published in the BMJ.

\n \n \n \nErlick, a senior neurosurgical registrar, received the award from the Royal College of Surgeons for 2014 and 2015. He has been with Professor Tipu Aziz\u2019s group since joining as a medical student ten years ago, with whom he has co-written the basal ganglia chapter of the forthcoming 41st edition of Gray\u2019s Anatomy. Other recent awards include the Congress of Neurological Surgeons' Ron Tasker Award and American Association of Neurological Surgeons' William Sweet Award.

This was a reciprocal visit arranged through the Royal Society\u2019s MP- Scientist pairing scheme which aims to build bridges between parliamentarians and some of the best scientists in the UK.
