'Challenges in the surgical management of Crohn's disease'

Biography

Lukas UngerLukas Unger is currently a Senior Clinical Fellow in the Department of Colorectal Surgery at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (OUH). He studied medicine in Vienna and Berlin, and started his academic career with a focus on immunology at the Medical University of Vienna where he completed his doctorate degree in transplantation immunology and end-stage liver disease. During his surgical training, he developed an increasing interest in colorectal surgery and particularly inflammatory bowel diseases. This led to a two-year competitively funded Erwin Schrödinger postdoctoral fellowship in Professor Arthur Kaser’s group at the University of Cambridge, elucidating the role of a Crohn’s disease risk gene of previously unknown function. After returning to Vienna and finishing his surgical training, Lukas became junior group leader at the Anna Spiegel Surgical Research Labs. His group’s work aims to improve outcomes after surgery for Crohn’s disease and to better understand, and ultimately treat, causes of recurrence.
