ONNRU specialises in conducting clinical trials and studies relating mainly to neurovascular conditions such as cerebral aneurysms, stroke and arterio-venous malformations. It also acts as a Core Lab for international studies.
This team was formed from a merger of the Neurovascular Research Unit (NVRU) and the University Department of Neuroradiology when both were relocated to the John Radcliffe Hospital from the Radcliffe Infirmary in 2008.
We specialise in conducting clinical trials, studies and registries relating mainly to neurovascular conditions such as cerebral aneurysms, arterio-venous malformations and stroke. We have also become a Core Laboratory for the analysis of images for international studies involved in the treatment of cerebral aneurysms.
ONNRU provide expertise in the provision of all aspects of clinical trials, observational studies, audits, registries etc. We have also been responsible for the co-ordination and running of several international randomised controlled trials including the groundbreaking International Subarachnoid Aneurysm Trial (ISAT). ISAT has been cited over 1000 times and recently held its final investigator meeting to share the findings of the study which have impacted on how people with subarachnoid haemorrhage have been treated.
ONNRU acted as the European Co-ordinating centre for the International Study of Unruptured Intracranial Aneurysms (ISUIA) and the TEAM trial. ONNRU has co-ordinated and participated in studies funded by the Medical Research Council, EU Commission, National Institutes for Health, Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Health Technology Assessment Unit, Oxford Biomedical Research Centre and several commercially funded studies.
Professor Byrne directs the taught MSc course in Endovascular Neurosurgery and the students are based in ONNRU and the neuroradiology department of the West Wing.
ONNRU also runs annual courses in new techniques for interventional radiologists. After the success of the course this years we are already planning the next Oxford Aneurysm Treatment school (OATS) which is scheduled for April 2015.
The Oxford Neurovascular and Neuroradiology Research Unit (ONNRU) is based on Level 6 of the West Wing at the John Radcliffe Hospital
