Oxford clinical islet transplant programme

The Oxford Islet Transplant Team has now performed 11 islet allo-transplants, the largest series within the UK. A multi disciplinary team has been established to further develop the clinical programme. In addition, the Oxford team is working in partnership with our colleagues at the Kings College Hospital in London as part of an islet isolation/transplant network.

Three phases of development are envisaged. First, further transplants will be performed using Edmonton-type protocols. Second, newer less toxic immuno-suppressive agents will enable the introduction of islet transplantation into the adolescent age group. Finally, once immune tolerance protocols have been developed, islet transplantation in children with diabetes will be possible. In addition to the islet allo-transplant programme, islet-after-kidney and islet auto-transplant programmes are being developed.
