The spleen performs diverse immunological, haemodynamic and blood filtering functions that are variously perturbed in primary splenic disorders and various systemic diseases. Splenic form and function are closely related, with an understanding of key pathological processes lending insight to the clinical manifestations of splenic disease. The appropriate investigation, diagnosis and management of patients with splenic disorders can be challenging and requires an integrated multidisciplinary approach.
