I graduated from the University of Adelaide in 2012 with a Ph.D in Biochemistry, based on research into the HIF family of hypoxia-sensitive transcription factors in sympathetic nervous system cancers. As a postdoctoral researcher within the Edwards group, I have now focused on multiple myeloma, an incurable, fatal malignancy which results from invasion of B-cell derived myeloma cells into the bone marrow microenvironment. My research examines the signals released by myeloma cells, and by the surrounding cells in the bone, and how they give rise to bone disease.

We have previously shown that bone marrow cells can be therapeutically induced to release adiponectin, a protein which kills myeloma cells. The effects of adiponectin on bone and cartilage formation and signalling is poorly understood, and my research involves determining the effects of this approach. With understanding of the signalling pathways involved, adiponectin-based therapies also have the potential to be used in treatment of bone diseases other than myeloma, such as osteoarthritis.
