DPhil student searches for new ways to make transplants last longer

Liz Wallin, a DPhil student in the Transplantation Research Immunology Group (TRIG), is leading an exciting new three-year study on transplant failure. The study centres around 60 kidney transplant patients from Central and South West England and could be the first step towards extending the lifespan of kidney transplants.
Double success at national urology conference

At the British Association of Urological Surgeon (BAUS) Annual Meeting, held in Manchester from 15 to 18 June, final year undergraduate medical student Joel Ward was awarded the BAUS 2015 Medical Student Essay prize. Also during the meeting, Clinical Lecturer in Urology Dr Richard Bryant received the Best Academic Paper award.

Oxford University's work on precision cancer medicine has received a significant boost after Cancer Research UK announced that it would give the existing Cancer Research UK Oxford Centre Major Centre status and increase funding for research in the city.

Oxford host first surgical research training course

On 29 April and 1 May 2015, thirty-eight surgical trainees from the Oxford and Severn Deaneries attended the first Bristol Oxford Surgical Trials Course (BOSTiC) - a joint initiative between the Oxford Surgical Intervention Trials Unit (SITU) at the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences and the Bristol Surgical Trials Centre (BSTC).

The BRC have released a video summarising the six-hour event that was part of the NIHR Oxford Biomedical Research Centre’s (BRC) Open Weeks series of events. The event featured talks and exhibitions about BRC-supported research such as trials of a “bionic eye” microchip implanted underneath the retina to partially restore vision for those who have lost their sight.
NDS’s Tipu Aziz on pioneering anorexia neurosurgery on BBC news

NDS professor Tipu Aziz appeared on BBC National news to speak about the pioneering surgery he delivered to a British woman who has had electrodes placed deep inside her brain in an experimental operation to help cure her of anorexia. Wires carrying electricity were connected to parts of her brain that register her feeling of reward when she eats. Professor Aziz said: “Anorexics have a 40 times higher mortality rate compared to the normal population and people forget that. Otherwise healthy people, mostly girls, die of this disease.” See him interviewed on BBC News.

Many congratulations to Dr Sushma Shankar who was awarded the Medawar Medal for best scientific presentation at the recent Joint British Transplantation Society and Nederlandse Transplantatie Vereniging Congress which was held in Bournemouth on 11 – 13 March 2015. Dr Shankar won this prestigious award for her presentation of “B cells from a tolerant environment can control a T cell allograft response in an antigen specific, IL-10 dependent mechanism” by Jessica Stolp, Masaaki Zaitsu, Sushma Shankar and Kathryn Wood.
DRIVE- Horizon 2020 Award

Prof Paul Johnson and his Islet Transplant Research Group have been awarded Horizon 2020 Funding as part of the DRIVE Consortium to evaluate and develop novel biomaterials and macroencapsulation strategies for transplanting islets without immunosuppression. This new award adds to their current FP7 European Funding, in which the Group has been evaluating and optimising islet function and survival within the MAILPAN (Deymed) device, with 'first in man' implantation planned in Oxford for 2016.
The PART Study has recently recruited its first two patients!

First liver randomised in the WP2 Liver Trial

The 16th January saw the first liver randomised in Barcelona in the WP2 Liver Trial! It was randomised to Normothermic Machine Perfusion arm and a member of the Consortium is currently in Barcelona with the team to take them out on this first machine procedure.
All COPE Trials now live

The Consortium for Organ Preservation in Europe (COPE) – an EU funded surgical research project on organ preservation – is running three clinical trials in five European countries. As of December 2014, all COPE trials are now live.
