We offer opportunities for research training for clinical and non-clinical graduates and host two taught master's courses. We are also responsible for delivering the surgical training on the undergraduate course in medicine.
Undergraduate education
We are primarily responsible for the delivery and development of surgical training for 4th and 6th year medical students.
Graduate Courses
NDS runs taught MSc courses in Integrated Immunology and contributes to the part-time MSc course in Surgical Sciences and Practice, which is run by the Department of Continuing Education.
We also offer opportunities for research training for both clinical and non-clinical graduates. We have a growing number of full-time funded research student opportunities.
Short Courses
Global Surgery Course
This five-day course looks at the provision of surgical services at a global level, encompassing all related specialties including obstetrics, gynaecology and anaesthesia/critical care.
PGCert in Patient Safety
The Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) is a part-time course for healthcare professionals, offered by the Department for Continuing Education in collaboration with the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences.

Appointment – Director of Graduate Studies

After many years, Professor Jon Austyn is stepping down as Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) for the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences (NDS), prior to his retirement at the end of this academic year. We are delighted to welcome Professor Claire Edwards as his successor.

Double success at The Transplantation Society Conference

The Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences (NDS) is pleased to announce its success at the 29th International Congress of The Transplantation Society (TTS 2022) in Buenos Aires, Argentina from 10 to 14 September. Hisashi Hashimoto and Professor Fadi Issa received a Mentee-Mentor Award and Marie Sion won a Young Investigator Award.

Two NDS researchers receive prestigious MRC Clinical Research Training Fellowships

Miss Catherine Lovegrove and Dr Alexander Sagar from the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences (NDS) have been awarded highly competitive Clinical Research Training Fellowships by the Medical Research Council (MRC).

DPhil student awarded prestigious prize by Italian medical academy

This year’s winner of the prestigious Giovanni Maria Lancisi Award is Dr Pierfrancesco Lapolla Losasso, DPhil candidate at Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences (NDS), presenting the research project 'Combined physiological and biochemical approach for the prediction of abdominal aortic aneurysm growth in humans' conducted through the OxAAA study.

MSc student wins COVID-19 African Innovation Seed Fund

Segun Afolaranmi of the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences (NDS) is one of five graduate students currently studying at Oxford who has been awarded a £1,000 grant from the Vice Chancellor’s COVID-19 African Innovation Seed Fund for an entrepreneurial project aimed at addressing global challenges stemming from the pandemic.
