Throughout history, stones have formed in the urinary tract (kidney and bladder). We are learning more about kidney stone disease and how best to prevent, diagnose and treat this condition.

The Oxford Stone Group seeks to promote excellence in kidney stone treatment and research by pursuing basic, translational, and clinical studies. The group is led by Dr Sarah Howles and Professor Ben Turney who are clinician-scientists, employed by the University of Oxford and working as consultant urological surgeons at the Oxford University Hospitals (OUH) NHS Foundation Trust.

Our clinical kidney stone service is based at the Churchill Hospital, Oxford and provides care to a population of 750,000 people, affording enormous experience in the management of complex kidney stone disease. 

Dr Howles leads research related to causal pathways and preventative therapies in kidney stone disease. Professor Turney’s research focusses on the design and evaluation of new endourological surgical technology. We collaborate with academic partners working in the fields of genomics, epidemiology, mathematics, and engineering, and with industry collaborators.

Our objectives are to:

  • Provide an excellent clinical service for patients with kidney stones.
  • Undertake high quality research to investigate the causes of kidney stones.
  • Find ways of improving kidney stone treatment.

Through our research we are learning more about kidney stone disease and how best to prevent, diagnose and treat this condition.
