Hello,

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences (NDS) at the University of Oxford. NDS is a large, disparate, and thriving community, excelling in its research, teaching and clinical care.

You have joined the department at a very exciting time of growth; our academic activities are expanding rapidly in research and teaching and we are planning new state-of-the-art research facilities.

The department currently holds the Athena SWAN Silver award from the Equality Challenge Unit. This shows the progression and positive changes we have made as a department in recent years and I look forward to our continuing journey towards equality of opportunity in higher education.

Our staff are based across multiple sites and as you go off to join your team at your new work location, I encourage you to stay actively involved with the wider department. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved in the activities that are happening in NDS, through social events, committees and working groups, seminars and research conferences. Take pride in the work that you do and let us know about the fantastic work that is going on in the department, so that we can publicise and share our achievements. We may be spread among multiple locations, however, we are one team working toward a common vision and goals.

Our mission is to lead discovery, innovation and education in surgical sciences. By working together, I am confident that we can all play a crucial part in making NDS even more successful in the future.

I do hope you find your time with us rewarding, stimulating and enjoyable, confident that the department supports and encourages success in your work life.

I operate an open door policy and if you have anything you would like to discuss with me or any suggestions for how we can improve or continue to develop the department, please come and see me.

With very best wishes,

Professor Freddie C. Hamdy
