Your first day
Meeting HR
On your first day, you will meet with a member of our HR team, either in person or online. If you haven't already, you must provide documents to prove your right to work in the UK.
The HR staff member will provide you with:
1. an induction pack, which includes all the information you need for joining the department;
2. your University card and if required an NHS badge, which is a form of identification, and information about how to gain access to departmental buildings and rooms;
3. you will be requested to write a short paragraph or two about yourself to enable us to set up your website profile on the 'Our team' section on the website. Please get in touch with our Communications and Public Engagement Officer, who will be able to provide you with a profile template relating to your role, and once completed, will process your new staff profile.
IT INDUCTION
After your meeting with HR, you will then have an IT induction with our IT Manager, Peter Moles.
1. During this induction, Peter will take you through the IT induction and provide you with all the policies and protocols surrounding information technology.
2. If required, you will be provided with equipment and an account to access your computer and the departmental network, as well as an IT Services account (Single Sign-on, or 'SSO'), which grants you access to the University's IT facilities, including email and WIFI.
Meeting your team
Next, you will be welcomed by your new line manager and/or team; we have created an induction checklist to ensure you get all the information you need. Within the first week, you will be given a tour of the office, getting a chance to see all of required facilities and locations for your new role.
Today is also the day to get to know your workplace, and you will be given an overview of the standard health and safety procedures, security and evacuation.
Transport to work
The University webpages gives details of help with loans for bus/train passes and bikes. The University's Science Transit Shuttle serves the University hospitals, including the John Radcliffe Hospital, Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre and Churchill Hospital (Old Road Campus). For those arriving on bike, the department and University hospitals have a number of bicycle racks around the buildings and throughout grounds.
If there is no alternative to driving, review the University Parking Permits for staff. If you want to park at one of the hospital sites, you will need to email the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Further information on travelling to the University hospitals is available on the John Radcliffe Hospital travel sheet and Churchill Hospital travel sheet.
Display Screen Equipment Assessment
It is a legal requirement for everyone to have completed a Display Screen Equipment Assessment for their current workstation. You can either complete the online version of the checklist with the link provided below or we can arrange for a trained DSE Assessor to work through the checklist with you.
If you would like to schedule an assessment to be carried out by the Departmental DSE Assessor please contact the HR team.
Employees who use display screen equipment (DSE) for a significant part of their work are able to claim the cost of their eyesight test at named opticians in Oxford, and up to £75 of any corrective glasses that are recommended by the optometrist for DSE use. You can find further information on the arrangements for DSE related eye sight tests document.
Health and Safety Induction
You will also be provided with information regarding your Health and Safety induction, which you will receive during your first few weeks. Please contact Jessica Doondeea, Laboratory and Facilities Manager to book onto the next available Fire Safety training course.
