Hazik Shahzad

BDS, MSc, PhD

Human Factors Research Fellow

My career focuses on improving patient safety and healthcare system efficiency by integrating human factors into clinical practice. Understanding how healthcare teams respond to emergencies is crucial for optimizing patient care. My work investigates rescue processes in emergency surgical settings, with a particular emphasis on human factors, workflow efficiency, and clinical decision-making.

I use statistical modelling, observational studies, and qualitative methods to analyse how teams manage acute deterioration in patients. By identifying patterns and barriers in care delivery, I contribute to the development of evidence-based strategies that enhance patient outcomes and safety. I am also involved in capacity-building initiatives, helping healthcare professionals integrate human factors principles into their workflow.

I am a researcher with a strong background in dental public health, biostatistics, and human factors in healthcare. My expertise spans statistical modelling, health systems research, and policy analysis. Before joining the RESPOND Programme at the University of Oxford, I worked in academia and clinical practice, contributing to public health research, epidemiology, and service delivery.

I have experience in teaching, research, and healthcare system improvement, having served as an Assistant Professor in Community and Preventive Dentistry and a Research Assistant in Epidemiology and Biostatistics. My previous work includes machine learning applications in health sciences, human factors research, and the optimization of healthcare workflows. I am actively involved in interdisciplinary collaborations and have contributed to research in clinical decision-making, digital health, and patient safety.
