'Perioperative near-infrared monitoring of tissue oxygenation in (paediatric) surgery'


Mr Merrill McHoneyMr Merrill McHoney trained in many paediatric surgical tertiary and quaternary centres (Great Ormond Streel Hospital in London, John Radcliffe Hospital Oxford, RHSC Edinburgh), and developed a broad experience in paediatric surgery. His interests in thoracic (lung and chest wall) and oncology surgery, desire to develop further expertise, working alongside a team of peers, and deliver a recognised service within the organisations where he works, is an ongoing aspiration. He has experience in laparoscopic management of complex gastrointestinal cases, and has several chapters on laparoscopic conditions (e.g., fundoplication, thoracoscopic repair of congenital diaphragmatic hernia, OA and TOF) in several books.

Mr McHoney developed an interest in minimally invasive surgery in children early in his paediatric surgical training. This led him to seek out and develop both clinical and research opportunities. He rotated through two laparoscopic fellowships and gained clinical exposure and training during these. His interest also led him to develop and perform a research project in laparoscopic surgery. This led to the first randomised controlled trial in laparoscopy in children and his PhD entitled 'The metabolic and inflammatory response to laparoscopy in children'.

Academic interest in the metabolic response to surgery in children has also led him to an interest in regional oxygen metabolism in paediatrics. He has several publications on NIRS measured oxygen concentration in paediatrics and the possible clinical application in monitoring in the surgical patient.

He has several peer reviewed publications in literature and several chapters in paediatric surgical textbooks. Because of his interest in minimally invasive surgery in children, he led, designed, edited an atlas of MIS in children 'Colour Atlas of Paediatric Laparoscopic and Thoracoscopic Surgery' (Published 2017). He has also been a section editor in Paediatric Surgery: A Comprehensive Text for Africa (2nd Edition, Published 2020).

He has been a member of the national MDT which advise on the management of congenital and acquired lung lesions and disease in children in our region.
