Surgical Grand Rounds - Mr Richard Owen, Mr Bruno Sgromo and Mr Geoffrey Roberts

Mr Geoffrey Roberts, Consultant Emergency General and Upper GI Surgeon, will discuss “Endoscopic management of foregut perforations”

Geoffrey was appointed as Consultant Emergency General and Upper GI surgeon at OUH in 2023, having completed higher surgical training in the East of England and a fellowship in Upper GI Surgery in Cambridge. He is passionate about the clinical, organisational and personal challenges of acute surgery, stemming from a broad generalist training and a life-changing six months as a volunteer surgeon in Zambia. He is a keen trainer of junior surgeons and has been anatomy demonstrator at the University of Cambridge as well as supervisor in anatomy and embryology at Emmanuel College and Trinity Hall. His doctoral research investigated the role of gut hormones in altered appetite, nutrient handling and glucose homeostasis after upper GI surgery. He has a specialist interest in complex benign upper GI surgery (and emergencies) alongside an emergency general surgery practice and he will be discussing the role of endoscopy in oesophago-gastric emergencies.

Mr Richard Owen, Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon, will talk about "Predicting response to immunotherapy in oesophageal cancer"

Richard has been a consultant upper gastrointestinal surgeon in Oxford since 2022, specialising in minimally invasive oesophageal and gastric cancer resections. Richard is also a principal investigator in the Ludwig Institute in Oxford and leads translational projects investigating oesophageal cancer detection and therapy response.  

Mr Bruno Sgromo, Consultant Bariatric and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon, will present "ICG fluorescence in minimally invasive oesophagectomy". 

Bruno has been a Consultant Upper GI and Bariatric Surgeon in Oxford since 2009, and worked as an honorary Bariatric Consultant in Chichester.

He has a special interest in obesity and weight loss surgery and has performed over 200 surgeries with excellent results, these operations include: laparoscopic gastric by-pass, gastric balloon treatment laparoscopic gastric band and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy.

Mr Sgromo leads the Oxford Bariatric Service and has been heavily involved in the development of the Unit organising several training sessions on laparoscopic gastric by-pass surgery.

As well as an interest in obesity surgery Mr Sgromo has gained a large experience in minimally invasive surgery (key hole surgery) a few of his operations have been published on Websurg.com, one of the most comprehensive surgical websites.

He is part of the educational and research committee for the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society (BOMSS) and he regularly attends the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity (IFSO) and the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) conferences.
