Miss Lovegrove, a MRC Clinical Research Training Fellow and DPhil student at the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences, presented her winning lecture, ‘Central adiposity raises serum calcium concentrations and increases risk of kidney stone disease’, at the SfE BES 2022 conference on 15 November in Harrogate.
This research was undertaken during her time as a NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow in Urology. “We demonstrated that there is a causal relationship between central adiposity and kidney stone disease, part of which is mediated through altered serum calcium concentrations,” said Miss Lovegrove. "This work is a springboard to the next stage in our research into the genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying kidney stone disease.”
She added: “It was a real honour and encouragement to receive the award as I embark on my MRC Clinical Research Training Fellowship under the expert supervision of Dr Sarah Howles, Professor Dominic Furniss and Professor Michael Holmes.”
