Anna Furmanski

Course Director, MSc Integrated Immunology and Senior Lecturer

I am the Course Director for the taught postgraduate programmes in Integrated Immunology, based in the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences (NDS). I lead and manage all aspects of course delivery and development for the full-time ‘on-campus’ and the part-time online variants of the MSc programme. I am also a Senior Lecturer; I teach on both courses and I am the primary academic supervisor for our students. I’m an educator and research scientist by background, and I have a passion for immunology. 

I completed my PhD in T-cell repertoire selection at Imperial College London, in the group of Julian Dyson and Liz Simpson FRS in 2006. I then conducted post-doctoral research in T-cell development and differentiation at Imperial and the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health (GOS ICH), mentored by Tessa Crompton. I obtained a local NIHR BRC junior fellowship and consumables funding from the Royal Society to work on problems related to thymus transplantation (2010-13). I then held an independent career development fellowship (Asthma UK, 2013-16) to study the role of morphogen signalling in Th2 cell differentiation. I have authored papers on multiple aspects of T-cell biology. I’ve also supervised student research projects at BSc, MSc and PhD level.

In 2015, I took up a senior lectureship in immunology at the University of Bedfordshire (UoB) in my hometown of Luton. This allowed me to work close to home and family when I became a mum in 2016.  At UoB I gained significant teaching, academic administration and management experience including BSc and MSc course leadership, and I was departmental co-ordinator for postgraduate research degrees.  For several years I’ve acted as an External Examiner of BSc and MSc courses elsewhere, and I’m a member of the British Society for Immunology’s Teaching Affinity Group committee. I firmly believe that education is empowering and life changing.
