Sheraz R. Markar is Director of NDS SITU, overseeing a portfolio of surgical clinical trials focusing on the management of gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary diseases. In this role he supports the full pathway of gastrointestinal development from initial design, funding application, trial set-up and implementation. Sheraz is also chief investigator for the national UK SARONG trial (Surveillance After Resection of Oesophageal aNd Gastric cancer) funded by the NIHR-HTA.
He is also Assistant Professor at the Karolinska Institutet, Sweden. He is an upper gastrointestinal surgeon, with the focus of his clinical practice and his research being the surgical management of patients with malignant and benign (including gastro-oesophageal reflux) oesophageal and gastric disease. He has undertaken two PhDs concerning the diagnosis and management of oesophageal and gastric cancer and his current primary research interests are concerning survivorship and surveillance following oesophageal and gastric cancer treatment, and standardisation of surgical quality assessment in upper gastrointestinal surgery.
In 2019, he was awarded the prestigious Rising Star award by the United European Gastroenterology and in 2020 he was awarded the Hunterian Professorship by the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Sheraz is Associate Surgical Specialty Lead in Oesophago-Gastric Surgery, Association of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons for Great Britain & Ireland (AUGIS), and Chairman of the Research Education Committee, European Association of Endoscopic Surgery (EAES).
