Introduction to the department
The Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences (NDS) is one of 16 departments within the University of Oxford’s Medical Sciences Division, employing ~180 members of staff. NDS is based across several sites in Oxford, including the John Radcliffe Hospital, the Churchill Hospital and three University research buildings.
NDS is one of the few remaining academic surgical departments in the UK, covering clinical and non-clinical research by postgraduate researchers, senior researchers, clinical lecturers and professorial staff. To which the department covers several disciplines: urology and surgical oncology, transplantation, neurosurgery and neurosciences, vascular and cardiothoracic, systematic reviews, safety and quality, and colorectal cancer research, to name a few. The department is governed by its Management Executive Board and Departmental Committees, which are supported by a number of specialist sub-committees, including Research, Equality Diversity and Inclusion (EDI), Graduate Joint Consultative and Health and Safety. The department is supported by our Business Administration Unit (BAU), which includes finance and grants, HR, EDI, facilities, IT, graduate administration, and communications.
