Biography
Dr Gabriella Y. Hyman received her MBBCh and is a PhD candidate in surgery and public health at the University of the Witwatersrand Department of Surgery, in Johannesburg. She is an inaugural recipient of the South African Medical Research Council’s (SAMRC) Institutional Clinician Researcher Program scholarship. She recently worked as an Academic Visitor in the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences. Gabriella is a fellow in the Wits SADC Regional Collaboration Centre for Surgical Healthcare (WitsSurg). She has worked as a general surgery medical officer at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital and completed a diploma in obstetrics. Gabriella serves as the trainee lead for the Global Initiative for Children’s Surgery (GICS). Gabriella is currently a Paul Farmer Global Surgery Research Fellow at Harvard Medical School’s Program in Global Surgery and Social Change, and an MPH-Global Health student at the Harvard University TH Chan School of Public Health (’24). She is passionate about surgical health systems strengthening, advocacy and developing sustainable implementation models for surgical healthcare policy.
