After many years, Professor Jon Austyn is stepping down as Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) for the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences (NDS), prior to his retirement at the end of this academic year. We are delighted to welcome Professor Claire Edwards as his successor.

Professor Claire Edwards and Professor Jon Austyn

Professor Edwards is an Associate Professor of Bone Oncology with a joint appointment in NDS and the Nuffield Department of Orthopaedics, Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Sciences (NDORMS), leading a research group studying the tumour-bone microenvironment. In addition to her research, Professor Edwards is an active member of NDS and NDORMS, having served as Academic Lead for the NDS Athena Swan initiative and as Chair of the Botnar Graduate Studies Committee. She has extensive experience not only of supervising graduate students, but also of overseeing graduate academic progression and welfare.

Professor Edwards will be working with Professor Ashok Handa (co-DGS) and Eleanor Wilson (Graduate Studies Administrator), comprising the NDS Graduate Studies Team.

Commenting on her appointment as DGS, Professor Edwards said:

“I am delighted to take over as Director of Graduate Studies for NDS and welcome this opportunity to support our students to fulfil their potential as they embark on their graduate careers. My door is always open for students and supervisors; please feel free to get in touch with any queries or concerns."
