Biography

Merrill trained in many paediatric surgical tertiary and quaternary centres (Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) in London, John Radcliffe Hospital Oxford, and Royal Hospital for Sick Children Edinburgh. He has experience in complex laparoscopic cases and has written chapters on laparoscopic conditions in several books. He also has several peer-reviewed publications in literature, and has led the production of, and edited, 'Colour Atlas of Paediatric Laparoscopic and Thoracoscopic Surgery' (Published in 2017). He's been a contributor to and section editor of ‘Paediatric Surgery: A Comprehensive Text for Africa’.

Dr Merrill McHoney's interests are in thoracic (lung and chest wall) and oncology surgery, his desire to develop further expertise, work alongside a team of peers, and deliver a recognised service within the organisation where he works, is an exciting prospect. He has developed an interest in minimally invasive surgery in children early in his paediatric surgical training. Merrill rotated through 2 laparoscopic fellowships. He led a research project in laparoscopic surgery. This led to the first randomised controlled trial in laparoscopy in children and his PhD entitled 'The metabolic and inflammatory response to laparoscopy in children'.

The Chief Medical Officer has confirmed that attendance at the Surgical Grand Rounds can count toward internal CPD, with 1 point awarded per hour. Please note that in-person attendance is required, and you will need to sign the attendance register.
