HR Manager | Accredited Workplace Mediator

I am the HR Manager for the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences, having joined the department in July 2013. I provide strategic and operational leadership across the full spectrum of HR activities, ensuring that high-quality, proactive people management supports the department’s academic and organisational objectives. The HR function sits within the Business Administration Unit, which oversees the department’s non-academic operations.

In my role, I advise senior leaders, managers, and staff on complex HR matters and oversee key people processes to enable effective workforce planning and a positive employee experience.

My areas of responsibility include:

  • Strategic recruitment and selection, including workforce planning and resourcing advice
  • Management of casual engagements and agency staffing
  • Oversight of pre-employment checks, right-to-work processes, and visa applications/extensions
  • Payroll coordination and HRIS governance
  • Departmental induction, probation oversight, and onboarding best practice
  • Contract and employment lifecycle management, including fixed-term contract processes, extensions and re-grading applications 
  • Sickness absence management and advice on leave entitlements and related policy
  • Management of visitor and affiliate processes
  • Performance management guidance and capability support
  • Manager development, coaching, and training initiatives
  • Management of reward and recognition initiatives
  • Succession planning and talent management

In addition to my HR leadership responsibilities, I am an accredited Workplace Mediator and contribute to the delivery of the Medical Sciences Divisional Mediation Service
