Rebecca Vaughan

DPhil

Postdoctoral Scientist

Rebecca is an Honorary Postdoctoral Research Scientist working with the Oxford Transplant Research Group. She completed her DPhil in Transplantation Science at the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences and St Catherine’s College, University of Oxford.

Her research focuses on understanding the molecular and pathophysiological consequences of donation after circulatory death (DCD), with a particular emphasis on kidney transplantation. She investigates metabolic, proteolytic, and protein-level alterations that occur during warm ischaemia, with a specific interest in matrix protein remodelling. By integrating proteomics, biochemistry, and translational clinical data, her work aims to identify mechanistic pathways and biomarkers that may improve assessment, preservation, and outcomes of DCD donor kidneys.

Research interests

  • Molecular injury pathways in DCD kidney donation

  • Protease activity and degradome analysis

  • Metabolic responses to warm ischaemia

  • Extracellular matrix and protein remodelling

  • Biomarker discovery for organ assessment.
