Biographies

Peter McCulloch - Professor of Surgical Science and PracticeProfessor Peter McCulloch is Professor of Surgical Science and Practice at the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences, University of Oxford. Peter's early research work was on cancer metastasis and gastrectomy technique. However, he has since become interested in patient safety and founded the QRSTU research group which is dedicated to studies of quality and safety interventions in surgery.

MBBS Mudathir Ibrahim - Clinical Research Fellow in Evidence-based Medicine and SurgeryDr Mudathir Ibrahim is currently a general surgery resident at Maimonides Medical Centre in New York, USA. After completing two years of training, he obtained sponsorship from his institution to complete a research fellowship in Evidence-based Surgery at Oxford university. 

His interest lies in gaining experience in evidence-based surgery, particularly its integration into clinical practice to improve the safety and outcome of surgical patients. To this end, he works under the mentorship of Professor Peter McCulloch within The IDEAL collaboration group (an international initiative dedicated to the systematic evaluation of surgical innovations and improvement of the quality of surgical research). He also collaborates with the Quality, Reliability, Safety and Teamwork Unit (QRSTU) to gain experience in the exploration and evaluation of human factors interventions on the safety of health care providers and patients. BSc, PhD Joanne Kitchin - Improvement Science and Human Factors Research AssistantDr Joanne Kitchin is a Human Factors Specialist based within the Quality, Reliability, Safety & Teamwork Unit (QRSTU) at the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences, University of Oxford. Her research focusses on team and system dynamics during collaborative problem solving tasks and is currently focused on designing and evaluating human factors interventions across a variety of healthcare settings including maternity, general practice, acute care and mental health. Dr Laura VincentDr Laura Vincent was appointed as a Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthesia in Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (OUH) in September 2019, having trained in the Oxford Deanery since the year 2000! She is Education and Simulation Lead for Adult ICU and her busy schedule of education, research and quality improvement activity is driven by a commitment to workplace culture, patient safety and staff wellbeing. She is a member of OxSTaR faculty, and is engaged in human factors and patient safety training with lovely colleagues throughout OUH.
