Biography

Anita Makins is a Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist with a specialist interest is in Global Women's Health. She has worked extensively in Sub-Saharan Africa and South East Asia with NGOs (including Medecins Sans Frontieres, SolidarMed, Chemonics, BMGF), Ministries of Health in several low and middle income countries and international organisations including the International Federation of Gynaecologists and Obstetricians (FIGO) and the WHO. She is the Director of new MSc in Global Women's Health and is leading its development which pending approvals will be launched in September 2025.

Alex Cairns is a Consultant Obstetrician and Subspecialist in Maternal and Fetal Medicine in Oxford. She is the Obstetric Lead for the Thames Valley Networked Maternal Medicine Service. She is Secretary and Trustee of the midwifery-led, UK registered charity, Midwives at Maternity Azur (MAMA), which runs two rural maternity clinics in Bunyoro region, Western Uganda, and supports a not-for-profit, NGO hospital (Azur Health Centre IV) in Hoima City. She has been travelling to Uganda since 2018, and now has her Ugandan medical registration, and volunteers with the Obstetric team at Hoima Regional Referral Hospital,. She is the UK link for the partnership between the Bunyoro and Buckinghamshire Oxfordshire and West Berkshire (BOB) Local Maternity and Neonatal Systems (LMNSs).
The Chief Medical Officer has confirmed that attendance at the Surgical Grand Rounds can count toward internal CPD, with 1 point awarded per hour. Please note that in-person attendance is required, and you will need to sign the attendance register.
