Global Surgery Course
Working towards universal access to safe, affordable surgical, anaesthesia and obstetric care.
Spotlight on Dr Hamdi Abdalkareem Abdalla Abdalrhman
Hamdi, a medical doctor and aspiring orthopaedic surgeon from Sudan, reflects on his experience after joining the Oxford Global Surgery Course in 2025.
'This intensive programme focuses on working towards universal access to safe, affordable surgical, anaesthesia and obstetric care and offers a unique lens on surgery as a global health priority rather than only a technical speciality.
Throughout the course, we explored a wide range of themes, including progress since the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery, children’s surgery, obstetric and gynaecological considerations, developments in anaesthesia, digital health innovation, task shifting, ethics, resource allocation, health economics and partnerships in fragile and conflict-affected settings.
The most stimulating aspect for me was the highly interactive format, with group discussions and presentations back to the wider cohort that encouraged critical reflection, challenged assumptions and linked global evidence to local realities.
It was a privilege to learn from leading surgery educators and clinicians and to engage with an inspiring, international cohort of colleagues committed to improving surgical care in low and middle-income countries.
The friendships, mentorship and collaborative spirit that emerged during the course have strengthened my resolve to continue working towards equitable, timely and safe surgical services for remote and rural communities in Sudan and beyond.'
