I am responsible for delivering head and neck/ endocrine surgical teaching for the 4^th year medical students.

The role involves designing and providing head and neck/endocrine surgery teaching to fulfil the requirement of GMC Medical Licensing Assessment. I am also an examiner for the 4^th year and 6^th year clinical exams.

As a member of the Surgical Teaching Committee, we regularly meet and share ideas to further improve the delivery of medical education.

Mr Richard Gillies BSc (Hons), MBBS, MD, FRCS (Gen Surg)

I am jointly responsible for the planning and delivery of undergraduate teaching in UGI surgery in Oxford. I attend the surgical teaching committee which meets online in the evenings. The surgical teaching committee has representatives from the surgical disciplines as the teaching leads and deputies and medical students from years 4, 5 and 6.

I am the Principle Internal Examiner in Surgery for Finals and have been Chair of Examiners. This role involves working closely with my counterpart in Medicine and the Assessment Lead in overseeing the examinations to ensure both the content and the process is robust and fair to students while meeting the GMC requirements of the new MLA exam. I am also an examiner for the Year 4 OSCE.  

I am involved in postgraduate surgical training and teach on courses including Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) and Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient (CCrISP). 

I am also strongly committed to encouraging and supporting women who wish to pursue a career in surgery.

Mr Richard Owen

Richard has been a consultant upper gastrointestinal surgeon in Oxford since 2022, specialising in minimally invasive oesophageal and gastric cancer resections. Richard is also a principal investigator in the Ludwig Institute in Oxford and leads translational projects investigating oesophageal cancer detection and therapy response.
