On Wednesday 3 July, the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences (NDS) hosted its third annual NDS Student Symposium at the Richard Doll Building on Oxford's Old Road Campus.

Students and staff standing together on the lecture theatre stage.

This vibrant and inspiring event brought together graduate students from across the department to present their research and engage with peers and senior academics.

The programme featured 27 concise talks and rapid poster presentations delivered by first-year, final-year, and MSc students. In addition to the oral sessions, students exhibited their work on posters displayed throughout the atrium, creating a dynamic space for discussion and discovery.

The breadth of topics covered sparked thoughtful questions and animated conversations, reflecting the diversity and depth of research within the department. The quality of the presentations was exceptional, underscoring the strength and promise of our postgraduate community.

All staff in the department were invited to attend and the sessions were chaired by: Dr Vidhula Ahire, Professor Claire Edwards, Dr Dimitrios Doultsinos, Professor Ashok Handa, Dr Young Eun Park, Professor Regent Lee and Dr Anna Furmanski.

The Plenary talk this year was given by Professor Eileen Parkes from the Department of Oncology who presented ‘A tangled web: Chromosomal instability (and an academic career)’.
