Congratulations to Ms Sushma Shankar from the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences (NDS) who has been recruited to the Royal College of Surgeons of England 2025 Emerging Leaders programme.

Sushma ShankarThe Emerging Leaders programme is open to women and non-binary individuals looking to grow their skills and influence change as they move into leadership roles. It offers participants an opportunity to develop their leadership behaviours, create networks and overcome challenges faced by women and non-binary people.

Following a competitive process, Ms Shankar, who is Senior Clinical Research Fellow and Honorary Consultant Surgeon in Transplantation within the Translational Research Immunology Group at NDS, was chosen for the 2025 Emerging Leaders cohort. The programme runs for 23 months, starting in February and finishing in December of next year.

Ms Shankar said: ‘It’s an honour to have been selected for the RCS Emerging Leaders programme. I am really looking forward to developing different skills whilst making the most of the opportunities presented by this fellowship. Female surgeons remain underrepresented in leadership. It can sometimes be challenging to be the outlier in the room and even more so to try and do something about that. I appreciate change will not occur unless we step up and forward.’
