The first award arrived at the 26th Association of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons (AUGIS) Annual Scientific Meeting in Oxford from 27 to 29 September. Mr Jones was awarded the inaugural Garden-Rees Prize for best oral paper in HPB (Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary). The prize was presented by Mr Myrddin (Merv) Rees OBE, Consultant Hepatobiliary Surgeon at the Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Later, at the 48th Pancreatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland Annual Scientific Meeting, which took place in Sheffield from 30 November to 1 December, Mr Jones won the Lord Smith Medal (pictured left) for outstanding performance in the field of pancreas research.
Both of these research prizes were awarded for his work on the therapeutic targeting of PI3K-gamma combined with radiation in pancreatic cancer.
Following on from these successes, Mr Jones also received a 2023 Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ASGBI) Gold Medal for best overall performance. The accolade was awarded for his outstanding performance in the intercollegiate specialty FRCS (Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons) examination in general surgery.
