TTS (The Transplantation Society) awarded the prize to Dr Elzawahry for his presentation, "Oxygenated hypothermic machine perfusion of the pancreas; a porcine circulatory death model to compare a ‘continuous’ and an ‘end-ischaemic’ approach".
Based within QUOD (Quality in Organ Donation) and working in collaboration with OCDEM (Oxford Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism), Dr Elzawahry focuses on exploring the potential use of oxygenated machine perfusion technologies in the preservation of pancreas organs prior to transplantation with particular emphasis on the potential of decreasing the postoperative morbidity associated with pancreas transplantation. Under the supervision of Professor Peter Friend and Mr James Hunter, he is investigating the mechanism of oxygenated hypothermic and normothermic machine perfusion of the pancreas aiming to bridge the gap towards clinical translation.
